Vegetable Gardening in the Pacific NW

The coastal Pacific Northwest can be an intimidating place to grow vegetables, but when armed with some basic knowledge, tools, and proper planning, anyone can grow a beautiful and bountiful vegetable garden. In this beginner's class, learn methods and best practices for growing vegetables in our area, including how to prepare and improve difficult soil, research and select good, hearty seeds, navigate area hazards, and tend a garden to a bountiful harvest!

WT-Master Gardener™ Training with OSU

To register for this class, you must use the OSU registration link below
The OSU Master Gardener Program is designed to provide in-depth training for local gardeners who will become volunteers in the community to help the OSU Extension Service answer home and community horticulture questions for the public. Course information is founded on research-based subject matter and covers all aspects of sustainable gardening and horticulture. Classes are taught by OSU instructors, Extension faculty, veteran MGs, and horticulture experts from the local community. Participants will be required to pass an open-book test at the end of the course.
Note: Completion of 40 hours of volunteer service during the year that training is completed is required in order to earn the Master Gardener certification.
10 Wednesday classroom sessions + 5 Saturday sessions

Application assistance is available in person in the Extension Office at 2001 Marine Drive, Suite 210, Astoria, OR 97103. The number of enrollees for the training program is limited to 30, with applications evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis through December 1st, 2024.

WT Early Childhood Literacy (via Zoom)

Students learn methods to foster language development in young children. Includes study of the development of language and communication skills, selection and presentation of appropriate young children’s literature and language arts activities, and intervention and evaluation of children’s communication skills.
Class meets every other Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm on Zoom for 5 total sessions.

Chess Fundamentals (Online)
with Reed McNames
This beginner-friendly course designed for those with little to no experience. You will learn the fundamental rules, how each piece moves, basic tactics, and essential strategies to build a solid foundation. Through interactive lessons, practice games, and guided analysis, you'll develop problem-solving skills, concentration, and patience through chess in a supportive and engaging environment.
Reed McNames brings years of playing and teaching experience. She has studied the game extensively, and currently teaches both group and one-on-one lessons, helping beginners build confidence and enjoy the game. Her approach is patient, encouraging, and focused on making chess fun and accessible for everyone.
Class participants will be required to create a free lichess account.
Class meets on Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30pm on Zoom for 5 total sessions.

Jewelry Metalsmithing
with Virginia Hall
Metalsmithing is the art and practice of forming and fabricating metal into jewelry. In this class, students will learn how to make copper, brass, and precious metal jewelry by using tools to produce pierced (cut-work) designs that reflect their individual style. Students will have access to the instructor's complete collection of equipment for forming, shaping, casting, coloring, and polishing.
An additional fee for supplies of $30 for new students or $15 for returning students should be paid to the Instructor on the first day of class in the form of cash or check.
All students should bring safety glasses to class, and returning students should bring their jewelry tools as well.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga

Come learn the basics of vinyasa flow yoga in which students learn postures that they connect to seamlessly move from one pose to another. In this class, students will link breath to movement, increase strength and balance, and build resilience.
Students should bring a mat to class.

Beginning Yoga

This yoga class is a beginner-level class that introduces the practice of yoga to students. This practice will warm and energize the body, and bring focus and clarity to the mind.
Students should bring a mat to class.

Stormy River Writers

In this class, students will learn about the importance of language, descriptive narration, and story structure. Students will examine and experiment with tenses, points of view, and sometimes write outside of their comfort zones. This course is for those who want to write every week and go over what they write with a group. Writers who are working on a memoir, a novel, or non-fiction are welcome. The ultimate goal of this class is to inspire, motivate, and support one another!

Instructor Bio: Sean Davis is the author of The Wax Bullet War, a Purple Heart Iraq War veteran, and the winner of the Legionnaire of the Year Award from the American Legion in 2015 as well as the recipient of the Emily Gottfried Emerging Leader, Human Rights award for 2016. His stories, essays, and articles have appeared in the Ted Talk Book: The Misfit’s Manifesto by Lidia Yuknavitch (Simon and Schuster), the Forest Avenue Press anthology: City of Weird, Sixty Minutes, Story Corps, Flaunt Magazine, The Big Smoke, Human (the movie), and much more.
