Oceanography: An Introduction

Come learn more about the ocean and our Oregon Coast. Topics to be covered include the ocean floor, waves and beaches, circulation and tides, storms and their effects, marine life, and climate change. There will be time for discussion, too!

WT Early Childhood Education: Special Needs Accommodations
with Diana Morimoto
This introductory class focused on Special Needs accommodations in the classroom is designed to provide educators with essential knowledge and skills to support children with diverse abilities. Throughout the 10-hour course offered as a hybrid option, participants will gain an understanding of different types of disabilities, learn about effective strategies for creating inclusive environments, and explore individualized approaches to adapting curriculum and instruction. By the end of the class, educators will be equipped with practical tools and techniques to ensure that every child, regardless of their unique needs, can thrive and succeed in the classroom setting.
Class meets every other Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm on Zoom or in person in Astoria for 5 total sessions.

Jazz Fundamentals for Players & Listeners
with RJ Marx
This class will cover key concepts, terminologies, and techniques in Jazz music. Whether you are a seasoned musician or a curious listener, this class will deepen your appreciation and understanding of the vibrant and dynamic art form called Jazz. Students and listeners of all levels are encouraged to participate!

Instructor Bio: R.J. Marx is a saxophonist and writer active in the music scene for over 40 years. He began his love affair with jazz as a teen. He went on to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston before relocating to New York City where he played with a variety of jazz ensembles and wrote extensively about jazz. In 2015, he moved to the Oregon Coast where he founded the R.J. Marx Quartet. He now performs at venues along the North Coast with groups including the Seaside Jazz Trio, the swing group Chelsea LaFey and the Salt Shakers, and the funk/fusion band Red String Theory.

Jewelry Metalsmithing
with Virginia Hall
Metalsmithing is the art and practice of forming and fabricating metal into jewelry. In this class, students will learn how to make copper, brass, and precious metal jewelry by using tools to produce pierced (cut-work) designs that reflect their individual style. Students will have access to the instructor's complete collection of equipment for forming, shaping, casting, coloring, and polishing.
An additional fee for supplies of $30 for new students or $15 for returning students should be paid to the Instructor on the first day of class in the form of cash or check.
All students should bring safety glasses to class, and returning students should bring their jewelry tools as well.

Writing A Memoir
with Eve Marx
This class meets in Astoria.
Come revisit and write about the important moments in your life including childhood memories, love, family, transformational experiences, your career, personal quests, and more. Each session will include time to write and time to share.
Students should bring a pen and notepad or tablet/laptop to class.

Instructor Bio: Eve Marx is a professional book author and journalist. Her essay collection, "View From the Porch: Tales from the Anti-Hamptons" won a Washington Irving award for literary excellence. She received her Master's degree in Education from Columbia University in New York City. For over twenty years, she has led memoir writing and creative nonfiction classes for children, teens and adults in traditional and nontraditional academic settings. She has been a newspaper columnist and feature writer whose work has been published in national magazines and regional publications. Her great joy is guiding both new and more experienced writers to explore and expand their literary talents.

Weaving Baskets: Bicycle Basket

Come make your very own basket! Learn how to weave a farm table basket. This type of basket can be attached to your bicycle. It could also be used to hold parcels or even to simply decorate any space!
A $55 fee for your supply kit and handle (natural and colored reed/rattan) should be paid to the Instructor at the beginning of class in the form of cash or check.
Please bring a sack lunch and these additional supplies: spray bottle, small bucket, soft tape measure, scissors, towel, pencil, flat-head screwdriver, and 4” zip ties.

Come write your very own life sketch. This class is for anyone who wants to write a brief auto-biography or ‘self-portrait’ that is focused on their life-long work or professional career.

Come learn the basic physiological, sociocultural, and socioeconomic elements experienced with aging. Share common factors associated with fear, grief, and loss that impact aging, and explore strategies associated with thriving in a changing world.
